Patagonia, a paradise for hikers and campers! If you ever come down here, you will see a lot of strongly prepared expert hikers/campers, spending weeks in the wild with pretty much nothing! But don't worry, you can still enjoy the beauty of this lands witouth investing in a tent and a sleeping bag! Here are 5 day-hikes you can do in Patagonia!
Torres del Paine is probably one of the meccas of hiking! This astonishingly beautiful national park possesses some tremendously breathtaking views! Most of the people coming here will spend at least 5 days to do the W circuit, and some will go even further and complete the O circuit (10 days), but you can still enjoy the park on a day-hike!
The easiest way to get to Torres del Paine is by bus from Puerto Natales. Once you get to the park, you will have to pay an entrance fee that will be valide for 3 days. The buses can stop at different spots of the national park, but the most impressive day-hike is the one to the Mirador de las Torres! This 8-hour trek (round-trip) is of certain difficulty, but the view up there is definitely worth all the efforts! Beware, it can get really cold up there!
A little bit off the beaten path, the hike to Glaciar Martial is still a really interesting experience. You can start walking from the city of Ushuaia or take a cab to the bottom of the climb! From there, you will have a 3-hour hike up the glaciar.
This is probably far from being the most impressive hike of Tierra del Fuego, but if you get there on a nice day you can slide on the glaciar and enjoy a really peaceful atmosphere (not much people make the effort to climb up here!).
Probably one of the most difficult, but definitely one of the most rewarding hikes I did so far. This is a real adventure, but the views are just extraodinary! Be ready to climb rocks and to walk on the hedge of mountains though, because it is not so easily accessible! You can get to Cerro Catedral by public buses from Bariloche and from there, either take a cable car that will save you about 3 hours, or go for the whole thing (be ready to hike for 9-10 hours then!).
This is probably not a hike for everyone, but it is a truly amazing experience and something you will be proud for the rest of your life! It can get a little bit tricky if you are scared of heights though, and be sure to be out of the mountain before night because the trail is not that well marked.
The most famous hike in El Chalten, the Argentinean capital of hiking, is pretty similar to the hike up to the Mirrador de las Torres. You can easily spend 6-7 hours going up and down. The first part of the hike is easy, but it can get quite challenging by the end! From the Laguna de los Tres you will be able to see the iconic Fitz Roy summit.
On your way back, I recommand you take the trail to Piedras Blancas and then come back to the main trail. This little detour of 2-3 hours is definitely worth it, as you will be pretty much alone with nature!
The other must-do trail in El Chalten will bring you to Laguna Torre and an impressive view of Cerro Torre. Less crowded than the trail to Laguna de los Tres, this hike is slightly easier and maybe a little bit more enjoyable. Be sure to go all the way until the end of trail and not only stopping at the Laguna!
Those are some of the hikes I personally did, but there are a lot of other day-hikes in Patagonia so don't hesitate to come and explore this wonderful region!
For every of those hikes, do bring enough water and food, even though in most cases the rivers and lakes can provide you fresh water on the way.
Enjoy!
